Joan Cox

As a New Orleans artist, I am drawn to the intense tropical foliage and colors of the city as well as the architecture and attitude of its residents.

Since Hurricane Katrina, I find myself trying to capture some of the beauty, mysticism, character, and even the some of the destruction of this unique metropolis. Since the storm I have spent a lot of time trying to determine what really symbolizes the city...and I have found a personal symbol in the statue of Joan of Arc, "The Maid of Orleans," that was given to New Orleans by France in the 1700's. I have used the image of the Statue to represent my many conflicting feelings about the city I love as well as the people who have persevered and survived and those who have lost everything, yet hold their heads high.
