Catherine Wagner Minnery
Art Endeavors West Member July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006
The landscape is an important source of inspiration for artist, Catherine Wagner Minnery, particularly the varied and familiar places close to her home and frequently traveled; the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley. But travel to other lands, such as Central America and Africa, has also influenced the images in her work. In 2002, Minnery traveled to Rwanda, Africa with Catholic Relief Services and produced a body of work from that experience. It has been exhibited in the Albany/Troy/Schectady, NY area as well as New York City, Baltimore, MD and Washington, New Jersey. Several images, with accompanying text, are featured on the CRS website.
Minnery works from quick, small studies that are drawn or painted on location and then reworks the images and ideas in the studio. “I am more concerned with capturing a personal sense of place rather that a correct visual representation. Hopefully, by filtering the subject matter through my own lens of experience and emotional/spiritual state, the resulting work will have more personal integrity. I also like the tension that can result from balancing what one might see visually, on the surface and the unseen or abstract.
In 2002, her work was included in the “53rd annual “Art of the Northeast” in New Canaan, Ct. In 2001, she was part of the New York Times, “In Art’s Footsteps”; a 10 part series that revisited locations illuminated by the Hudson River Artists. Her work is included in corporate, public and private collections. One of her pieces was included in the “American Art Collector”.
In November 2003, she opened “working “Gallery/Studio in Schenectady, NY and has been a member of the Piermont Flywheel Gallery, Piermont NY, since February 2004. Minnery is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and a graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati. She is a resident of Saratoga Springs, NY.
